Osteoporosis is a silent but serious disease that weakens bones, making people more prone to fractures. People may not know they have osteoporosis until a fracture occurs. At our clinic, we are committed to promoting bone health, detecting osteoporosis early and limiting its progression.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteopenia & Osteoporosis represent a continuum of conditions that present with a decrease in bone mass and disrupted bone microarchitecture most commonly because of increased age, menopause, or metabolic abnormalities. Osteoporosis occurs when the body loses more bone than it builds, leading to weak and brittle bones. As bone is constantly being broken down and rebuilt, this imbalance leads to a greater risk of fractures with time if left untreated. Common symptoms of advanced osteoporosis include back pain, loss of height and a stooped posture.

Who Should Be Screened?

Osteoporosis is often diagnosed with a DEXA scan, a bone density test that helps assess fracture risk. We recommend screenings for the following populations:

  • Women over 65, or younger with risk factors
  • Men over 70, or younger with risk factors
  • Anyone over 50 who has experienced a recent bone fracture
  • Anyone who has lost 1.5 inches in height
  • Anyone with persistent back pain

General Risk Factors for Osteoporosis

Certain factors can increase the risk of osteoporosis, including:

  • History of fractures
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Smoking or excessive alcohol consumption
  • Early menopause or hormone imbalances Menopause or hormone imbalances.
